What Causes Hair Loss After Discontinuing Dutas-0.5mg And Bioext-Plus Tablets?

Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Hello Sir,

I have been using Hair 4 U 10% everyday in night since last 1 year and found it worked for me.

With that doctor prescribed me Dute 0.5mg and Bioext Plus Tablets on alternate days for six months.

Now that I have stopped that tablets the shedding effect appears to be diminishing and bald patch is visible again.

SO my question is do I need to start tablets again along with the lotion.(I am still using the lotion H4U 10%)

Brief Answer:
I suggest Oral finasteride rather than dutasteride

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I have taken note of your query and i have noted down your concern.

You seem to have Androgenetuc Alopecia Or Male pattern androgenetic alopecia.

Only topical Minoxidil and Oral finasteride are approved remedies for this type of hair loss in males. Treatment is long term and may be life long.
Finasteride is an Oral antiandrogen that blocks the effect of male hormones on hair miniaturization.
The tablet that you were taking contains dutasteride rather than finasteride. Dutasteride is a more potent antiandrogen as compared to finasteride.
Though dutasteride is effective in androgenetic alopecia but it is not yet approved for it as it has a greater incidence of sexual side effects like loss of libido and impotence as compared to finasteride.
Though dutasteride is being prescribed by dermatologists for androgenetic alopecia either at low doses or on alternate days only for a short time at start of therapy but it is certainly not for long term use because of sexual side effects.
For optimal results I suggest that you be re-started on an oral antiandrogen but instead of dutasteride I would suggest that you be started on Oral Finasteride. Finasteride should be continued long term i.e 1-2 years for maximal benefit and even after that for maintenance.
Finasteride has a lower incidence of sexual side effects i.e only 1%-2% may notice.
Moreover finasteride is approved for this type of hair loss in males.

Brief Answer:
Finasteride is to be taken life long

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Finasteride 1 mg is the recommended dose in androgenetic hair loss.
Duration of treatment is life long. It is safe for long term use. Only 1-2% of patients may complain of side effects like decreased libido but these side effects are temporary and disappear on continued treatment.
Finasteride is available as various brand names in XXXXXXX like Tab. Finax 1 mg (Dr. Reddy's lab ), Tab. Finpecia 1 mg (Cipla laboratories). Internationally it is available as propecia tablet 1 mg.
These are prescription drugs. I suggest that you take either of these under supervision of your dermatologist.
Bioext plus is just a nutritional supplement and has no specific role in androgenetic alopecia.
You may continue with the shampoo that you are already using.
Hair oils have no role in androgenetic alopecia. Moreover, hair oils are not to be used while you are using minoxidil solution as oils may hamper its absorption into scalp skin.
You may however use a hair conditioner.

Thank you very much for your quick response Doc.

One last question that you have not answered about doses of Finasteride i.e, how many times a week / alternate days?

Also if there is any medication for hair conditioner please recommend.

Thank you again
