What Causes Frequent Urination?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: Hi,
For the past 10 days my mother is frequently urinating. The complaint she states is her bladder is always full. She is urinating very few drops each time. But during nights, she does not urinate that often.
We has done abdominal scan in which everything was normal - No stones, uterus was normal in size. She has only gallstones. She does not have abdominal pain. Urine culture showed no growth. She is at present taking "Terol 4 mg" , urimax given by a urologist. But it has not reduced the problem. Another doctor prescribed Alcit liquid and zenflox-UTI. Please help us.

Brief Answer:
Treatment suggested by your urologist is in right direction.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Health care Magic.

I am Dr. Shama and I will be answering your question.

The symptoms suggested by you about your mother indicate a common condition called as bladder spasms.
This condition is characterized by over contraction of the bladder resulting in sensation of fullness of bladder and urge for urination very frequently. Normal abdominal scan further confirms the diagnosis.

The common causes for this condition are urinary tract infection, ageing....

If I were to be your treating doctor I would have used drugs like Terol to treat the spasms of the bladder.
This requires 4-6 weeks to respond to treatment.

Hence I feel the treatment advised by your urologist is in right direction and you need to continue the same treatment.

This condition does not seem to be associated with urinary tract infection as she is not having symptoms suggestive of infection like burning urination, pus, fever....
Hence I feel there is no need for zenflox and alcit liquid which are used to treat urinary tract infection.

Hence to conclude the treatment advised by your urologist is right and this condition takes time to respond, hence the needs to continue the same treatment.

Hope this answers your question.
Please write back to me for further questions.

With regards

Hi doctor,
Thanks for your reply.
But after using these tablets she is having lot of side effects - dry mouth, dizziness etc.
One more thing I wanted to tell you is she had Norflox 400,urispas and pantop 40 before giving the urine culture. Is there a possibility that the bacterial growth did not show up because of the tablets she had.
Is there a replacement for Terol and Urimax prescribed by our Urologist.
She also says that she is feeling very difficult to pass urine after taking all these tablets. she is not passing urine completely.

Brief Answer:
The dose can be decreased to avoid side effects.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for the follow up question.

It is possible that because of treatment by antibiotics by norflox urine culture has come negative. But no need to worry as she does not seem to be having urinary tract infection.

The drugs used for treatment of bladder spasms act by decreasing the secretions and hence can cause side effects of dryness of mouth...
Hence the better alternative is to decrease the dose from 4mg to 2mg to avoid side effects.

Hence I advice you to consult your urologist for decreasing the dose.

Hope this is helpful to you.

Please write back to me for further questions.
