What Causes Frequent Urination At Night In An Elderly Person?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Jan 2017
Question: I am a male, 71 year old. Over the past 5 years, the urge to urinate has increased to the point that I urinate about every 2 hours (which means I am up about 3 times during the night). There is no leakage and my prostate exam indicated a normal prostate (not enlarged).

A repeat ultrasound and urinalysis is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had been experiencing lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be overactive bladder though possibility of prostate still doesn't rule out. At times during development of prostate hypertrophy internal lobes gets enlarged and impart pressure in urthera and may lead to such symptoms. I would suggest to have a fresh ultrasound KUB and prostate alongwith pre and post void volumes. PSA levels may also be needed. Check the fasting sugar levels as well.

Another possibility can be due to urinary tract infection and urinalysis may also be needed to be repeated. Other measures can be to avoid diuretic fluids like coffee or tea or drugs which increase urinary urge.

If problem persist kindly get a detail review done by a urologist. Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
