What Causes Frequent Loose Stools In A Child?
Question: Hello doctor,
My 8 months old daughter has been passing motions more frequently since yesterday. She had motions 6-7 times yesterday and 2 times since morning. The last motion was comparatively watery. Usually she has motions only once or twice in a day.
She looks active otherwise and had food yesterday. Also her anal area is red.
Is there a need for medicine? If yes, suggest which medicine.
Thanks,
XXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Usually loose stools at this age is because of viral infection.
It will take a few days to settle.
All i advice my patients is frequent feeding, oral rehydration solution like electral and zinc.
No need for antibiotics if no blood in stools.
It is better to keep a watch on urine output .
If baby passes urine atleast six to eight times daily it indicates that hydration is adequate.
If urine output is low or if baby becomes dull take to nearby hospital immediately.
For rash avoid wipes.
Use direct water to wash.
I usually advice emollients like siloderm.
Wishing your baby good health and speedy recovery.
