What Causes Foul Taste In Mouth?
Question: Hello recently I have this horrible nasty taste in my mouth...my saliva smells nasty when I spit it out which I do frequently thinking I might be swallowing infection. Sometime, I seem to salivate more than normal. I am now getting a very,very slight sore throat.. deep in the back of my throat. I take Prilosec 3 x a week...20mg delayed released. It helps if I am having GERD symptoms...I am also concerned could this be a bad tooth? This nasty taste comes on after about 1 to 2 hrs of eating "anything" doesn't matter what I eat, I begin to taste this awful taste and then I salivate and spit and spit.... and the taste is much, much worse when I wake up. I go through bottles of Listerine which gives some relief of the bad taste. I am sure my breath is horrible!!! I saw a Dr 4/5 days ago ( not anyone that has seen me before) he suggested a sinus infection and gave me Amoxicillin! Nothing has changed. When I spit the saliva out it is " very light yellow" to clear...Weeks ago it was bloody... now the blood has stopped... But I have 2 teeth that are presently bleeding off and on and I suspect the bleeding was coming from the teeth. NO blood in a 2 weeks now... I have an appt with a Gastro Dr in Oct Wondering if the Dentist should be included to help DX this? I worry about esophageal problems too because when I had an endoscopy ( 4 yrs ago) I had horrible pain afterwards for about 3 days in the upper chest area. It began immediately when I woke from the procedure to the point the Dr ordered me a "cocktail" to help alleviate the symptoms and the Dr said " I wonder if you have esophageal problems" .. No 2nd endoscopy has been done since then.

-Dental probelm ( decayed tooth, infection in gums , bacterial or fungal infection that effect your taste buds on tongue causing unpleasant taste ) .
- Halitosis or bad breath that means deposition of food particle in between teeth and subgingival areas of gums causing bad taste and bleeding gums .
- Drug induced : some drugs also cause unpleasent taste in mouth .
- Acid reflux : acid reflux also cause bitter taste in mouth as stomach acid comes in mouth.
-Nasal problem : infection or sinusitis .
For this I will suggest you to try these home remedies :
- Brush your teeth twice daily using soft bristle toothbrush.
- clean your tongue after brushing using tongue scraper.
-Do XXXXXXX warm saline rinses 2 -3 times a day .
- use waxed floss to clean interdental areas of teeth .
-Avoid hot , spicy food and drinks like tea , coffee .
- increase fluid intake , drink water in short intervals .
Follow the above home remedies and see a oral surgeon(dentist) along with Gastroenterologist for visual examination of oral cavity for gum infection and if needed go for oral prohylaxis (scaling and root planning) .
