What Causes Folliculitis Decalvans After Taking Kenalog Injection?

Question: My husband has follicutitus decalvans and after kenelog injections the pustules flattened and pain subdued and has been the case for six months. His nhs dr suggested a biopsy which was done three days ago. Ten site of the biopsy and all along the head (where the scarring is) has turned red and pink and is very painful. Do you think this is the FD returned or an infection from the biopsy. PLEASE HELP,

Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.
Most likely it is a secondary bacterial infection since it started right after biopsy. I would suggest a course of an Oral antibiotic e.g Amoxicillin+Clavulanate 625mg, 3x daily for a week.
He may also take an Oral antiinflammatory e.g Diclofenac 50mg or Ibuprofen 400mg, 2x daily.

Thanks. It's my husband and he's convinced it's the FD returning but it seems a bit of a comicidence three days after biopsy. Also he's got water in the biopsy area and put hair fibres to cover biopsy and other scarring so I guess this will i crease liklihood of it being an infection? Also how long until he can shower after biopsy and now possible infection as showering gives him great relief?

Hi.

Keep the biopsy site open. He may use a topical antibacterial e.g mupirocin cream for local application at stitch site.
He may avoid showering for at least 3-5 days, till the antibiotics take effect.
