What Causes Fluctuating Pulse And Hot Sweats While Taking Prednisone?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Aug 2015
Question: I am getting hot sweats and then shaking chills. When the chills come my temperature is ranging from 96.3 F to 96.9. My pulse is fluctuating between 60 )sweats) and as low as 51 during the cold phases - usually around 53 during the chills.
Then I will feel normal. I have just been bumped up to high Prednisone (70 mg per day, and wonder if that could do it. Can I safely go to sleep?

Actually C-reactive protein was 12.7.

Brief Answer:
It is a side effect of Prednisolone.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Yes, chills and hot sweats are a genuine side effect of PRednisolone.
Particularly since the dosage is quite high, that is why it is happening.
ANd it will go away in a day or two, as your body adjusts to the steroid.
Yes, you can safely go to sleep, make yourself as comfortable as you can by layering yourself and having a good ambient temperature.
Do not worry, this will stabilize over the next few days.
All the best

Let me be clear then, the palpitations and even the body temperature of 96.3 temp and the low pulse of nearing 50 is OK. I am not going to go into coma in my sleep?
The sweats tried to come on just a few minutes ago, but this time went right into shivers and palpitations.
I am worried that either temperature or pulse will go too low while sleeping.

Have been on Prednisone for about a month. Last dose was at 10:30 (10 mg.) I had infection induced asthma with the bacterial bronchitis. It looks as though it was in my sinuses as well, although the Phlegm was in the back of throat not in the nose. Things started right after dose before that at 7:30 pm but escalated right after last dose. Yes I was very healthy other than the physical in May showed C-reactive protein of 6. No cardiac issues - just these palpitations.

PS It seems to escalate when I lay down in bed and start to go to sleep. I am also dizzy!!

Blood pressure is bouncing around from 138/60 (sweats) to 115/65 (chills). The lowest was 110/55. It is normally around 128/80 but this morning it was 178/80???. Dose. Went from 60 Saturday to 80 Sunday to 70 today. No, not to my knowledge not below 60 on the pulse. Not below 97.5 on the temp.

I think that you can safely try and sleep.
These changes are part of the side effects of Prednisolone.
Do you have somebody living with you ?
If so, that person can watch intermittently.
If you are alone, it is best to have an evaluation first so that you can have a sound sleep, else you are definitely going to be anxious.
Take care.
