Question: My 11 year old son has had a fever of 101 or higher for the last 3 days. The fever is gone but he is now developing symptoms of swollen hands and bottom of his feet and he has a red blotty rash on his back and legs. Should I be concerned and should he see a doctor?

Brief Answer:
Fever with rash

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

Your son has been having fever for 3 days and now that the fever is abating he has developed a rash and swelling. This could be what is called Fifth's disease. It is the 5th childhood illness associated with fever and rash. The other childhood illnesses would be measles mumps or rubella. 5th's disease is a benign condition and will resolve without treatment. But since we can't actually see and exam him I would recommend that he be seen to confirm the diagnoses. There are other rare conditions that can mimic this disorder and need to be treated.

For his comfort you can use tylenol for the pain and fever and benadryl for the itching if it occurs. Maintain good nutrition and hydration

In summary
1. Fifth's disease
2. self limiting and will resolve without treatment
3. Push fluids and rest
4. Recommend seeing medical provider to confirm diagnosis
