Question: it is not for me; it is for my daughter who lives in XXXXXXX ca. she has been under the weather since saturday. it started out with fever, chills severe back pain (the whole back); achy all over. Today, chills are gone but still has lower back pain and is now very congested. I urged here to see a doctor but to no avail. She has been taking extra strength tylenol for the pain and now she is taking sudafed for the congestion. What can I do?
also she started out with a sore throat which is now less.

Brief Answer:
Viral infection take symptomatic treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for your query at HCM.
I understand your concern for your daughter.

The symptoms suggest that she has developed upper respiratory tract infection. These are mostly due to viruses like influenza virus, para influenza virus, Respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, etc and they are self limiting and patients start to feel better in 7-10 days. Just need to take antipyretics like acetaminophen or Tylenol, antihistamines, nasal decongestant Sudafed can be continued ask her to take it with full glass of water for not more than7 days. There is no need to take any antibiotics as they are ineffective in viral fever. Her symptoms suggest viral infection only. Ask her to keep warm and take plenty of fluids and eat protein rich balanced diet. If she develops vomiting, diarrhoea, respiratory difficulties in that case she must immediately visit a doctor. If she has severe throat pain and exudates around tonsils then get oral swab test done for gram staining microscopy and culture sensitivity test for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria especially Group B strep. She can also get her haemogram test done. Ask her to take rest and don't worry. She will be fine. Ask her to take a flu shot.

Take care.
