Question: I have a lump like feeling in my throat when I swallow. when I drink or eat I don't notice it as much. it seems to be more towards my left side above my XXXXXXX apple. sometimes the sensation leaves and comes back, also it seems to move up and down a bit. Also, feels like my left ear is stuffed up like the feeling you get in your ears when you fly.

Need clarifications....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

From what I understand you feel a lump like structure in your neck towards the left of Adam's apply. This lump moves up and down. You also have blocked left ear.

I think of a few possibilities that matches your description. However I would like some details before I present them.

1. Since when was this lump noticed?
2. If you are able to feel it, can you give me an approximate size?
3. Is it soft or firm?
4. Does it move up and down when you swallow water?
5. Are you running fever?
6. Do you feel pain or difficulties while swallowing?

Awaiting your response...

Brief Answer:
Tonsil / pharyngeal infection...

Detailed Answer:
This clarifies it better.

It most likely seems you have an inflammed tonsil / pharynx on the left side. The ear block may be from a direct extension into the middle ear. If you have been suffering with nasal congestion / blocked nose or post nasal drip, it would make this diagnosis very, very likely.

In all probabilities, I don't feel you have a serious problem. You will definitely feel better in 2-3 days. I suggest you try warm salt water gargles or betadine gargles three times a day. Steam inhalation will add more benefits to this treatment. Besides this, I would also start you on throat lozenges such as cepacol or chloraseptic that are available over the counter.

I wouldn't be worried unless you develop a high grade fever. Your doctor will need to examine the throat and order for investigations before starting antibiotics.

In a nutshell, nothing serious. You can take care of it through the measures suggested, good hydration and rest.

Hope I am clear. Let me know if you need clarifications.
