What Causes Fecal Smell Coming From Buttocks?
Question: Hello, my 21 year old son has been having problems with a fecal smell coming from his buttocks. This issue appears to become more serious when he is anxious or stressed. He is also having either sweat or a clear discharge from the anus. The issue is not due to hygiene problems. Could this be caused by an abundance of bad bacteria in his system or a infection near the anal opening? The issue started months ago when he was away at school and eating a large amount of fish. Could mercury poisoning cause this?

I guess your son is quite hairy in the area of buttocks. Excess hair , sweating could predispose to many things.
I would suggest you the following possible causes for cause of putrid smell nd discharge
1. Fungal infection in folds of groin: It will produce blackish discolouration of buttock folds and can be associated with itching
2. Pilonidal sinus: : It causes repeated discharge of pus like and hairy material
3. Peri anal abscess
Excat diagnosis will depend on visual and clinical examination of the region. It would help if you could provide clinical photograph.
I would suggest the following which will help your son
1. Shaving the hairs of buttock: Always keep the area hairless
2. Hot Seitz bath: To a tub of lukewarm water add handful of common tablet salt. Your son should sit in it immersing the bottom for 15-20 minutes each session thrice a day
3. After the buttock properly clean and dry the buttocks using soft towel
4. Apply Clotimazole dusting powder 3-4 times a day
