What Causes Fatigue, Pulsating Dizziness And Body Pain While On Omnicef?

Posted on Thu, 25 Jun 2015
Question: I have been taking Omnicef for five days (just finished the course) and I have been feeling extremely tired, fatigued for the last four days. I have never felt that week, I can hardly move and I can hardly keep myself awake. I also feel my head pulsating, I have pains all over my body, e.g. lower abdomen, back (tenderness) and I feel nauseous. I believe it could be a side effect of the drug. What can I do?

Brief Answer:
They could be side-effects

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

your symptoms could be side-effects of omnicef.
Omnicef may cause:
- somnolence (0.2%)
- headache (2%)
- nausea (3%)
- abdominal pain (1%)
- rhabdomyolysis rarely (which may present with pain in various sites)

I can't say whether the symptoms that you feel are due to the drug or the infection itself but most of them can be attributed to documented omnicef side-effects.

Since you're having so many symptoms, you should discuss about alternative treatments with your doctor. Various penicillins can substitute cephalosporins in many cases.

I hope I've helped!

Thank you for your reply

Would you recommend any kind of recovery program? I am not taking the antibiotic any more, just stopped today.

Or is sleeping the only solution?

Brief Answer:
If the infection is considered cured then just give it a couple of days

Detailed Answer:
You're welcome!

You haven't mentioned the reason you were taking omnicef (the kind of infection that is) but if your doctor thinks that the infection is cured, then you should just give it a couple of days (or so) more. Sometimes infections may cause various non-specific symptoms like the ones you've had even after they're gone. Some infections may do so more than others. For example infectious mononucleosis related fatigue may last for months. Influenza related fatigue usually lasts for days, etc.

So you should just make sure that the symptoms you're having, do not mean that the infection is not under control. Signs of a bad outcome regarding the infection is an increased heart rate, relapse of the fever and other signs depending on the pathogen and the site of infection. Drug related symptoms will usually last for as long as the antibiotic has been eliminated from the body. For omnicef this is not more than 24 hours.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
