What Causes Fatigue And Appetite Loss?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: I am a 67 1/2 yr old woman who had a L5-S1 fusion with laminectomy incl allograft & cage on Sept 29. I did have a post-op ileus which kept me IH an extra 3 days. However I now have MUCH less pain although have experienced muscle spasms.

My real concern is extreme weakness/exhaustion and lack of appetite. I am amazed at the limited amount of time I can be up and active. I can manage making an omelette, but not make dinner, can put laundry in washer and later fold it, but not put it in or take it out of the dryer.
I am taking only 1 or 2 5mg oxytocin tablets a day. Am I expecting too much too soon?

Brief Answer:
Not likely to be due to surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
It is more than 3 weeks since you had the surgery. The weakness that you are feeling can be due to poor diet - lack of adequate nutrients like calcium, zinc and Vitamin D3 can make you feel like this.
The other causes are are high blood pressure, low blood pressure, cervical spondylitis, anemia, and low blood sugar, use of sedatives, tranquilizers and antidepressants.
Electrolyte imbalance, Hormonal disbalance like hypothyroidism and Anxiety neurosis also need to be ruled out.
I advise you for
Try taking out some time to do yoga
Plenty of water
Take calcium, iron and B complex vitamins for few weeks
Get your hemoglobin and hypothyroidism checked up
I hope this answers your query.
