Brief Answer:
PFT assess severity of pulmonary impairment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Pulmonary function tests(PFT) measures how well lungs are working. This includes how well patient is able to breathe and it indicates severity of pulmonary impairment.
It is mainly used to assess pulmonary capacity, level of obstruction/restriction in pulmonary tree.

If there is any respiratory compromise due to injury then pulmonary function test will be altered but it can't detect exact etiology i.e injury. It mainly assess in the form of obstructive and restrictive pathology.
Patient need further investigations like CT scan for proper evaluation.
