What Causes Facial Telangiectasia?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Apr 2014
Question: I have what I think is a broken or burst blood vessel on my face and what appears to be another one under the skin that is bulging out. What can I do about this? It no doubt has to do with age (I am almost 62), but I would like to do something about it as it is not very pretty. Is this a question for a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon? I would like to have my old clear complexion back. Did this happen due to stress? How can I stop it happening and how can I clear this up?

Brief Answer: Nd-Yag lasers; sunscreens; reassurance Detailed Answer: Hi there. This could be a question for a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon depending on whether your preference for intervention is non-surgical or surgical. Being a dermatologist, I always advocate the conservative approach first. Having said this, your particular issue will require treatment with non-invasive lasers. In good hands, you will get excellent results. The choice of lasers & cost will depend on the treating dermatologist/cosmetologist. I personally would prefer an Nd-Yag laser. Typically with facial telangiectasia (condition you manifest with), a single session would suffice...maximum 2 sessions. Stress does aggravate these issues but regular application of a sunscreen every 3-4 hrs & 20 minutes before light exposure will go a long way to keep your skin looking younger & prevent this happening. Trust this answer is precise, informative, prompt & gives you a clear action plan ahead. Good Luck & Here's to a clear complexion soon! Cheers! Dr Praveen Rodrigues MD
