What Causes Extreme Hot Flashes When Diagnosed With Severe Adhesive Arachnoiditis?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with severe adhesive arachnoiditis in 1999 after multiple medical traumas to my spine. I am a 58 year old (almost 59) woman. I have intermittent bouts with months long times of having extreme hot flashes (to the point of making of making sick to my stomach) and night sweats which leave me burning up and freezing, and my sheets and night clothes soaking wet. I am MISERABLE! I thought I was done with the "personal summers" part of my life. Can you give me any suggestions as to what I can pro-actively do about this problem? Are there natural remedies or anything prescription-wise that I could be taking to minimize these symptoms? I know AA can really wreak havoc on your personal thermostat, and mine is TOTALLY out of control right now!! Terrible days and no sleep! Thank you

Brief Answer:
There are few things you can do to improve symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

I am sorry to hear what you are going through, as the adhesive arachnoiditis is a severe, incurable inflamation of the middle layer of spine coverings, caused by repetitive surgery, or by use of chemical agents to spine such contrast mediums.

What you can try to minimize symptoms, besides drugs, includes:

- physical therapy, ( myofascial releasing technique, cranial-sacral therapy )
- spine manipulation such TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), laser therapy, acupuncture.
- exercises against loss of spine mobility such hydrotherapy and isometric exercises.
- if you noticed any triggering food ( eg. caffeine, etc.), you should avoid them.
- medical marihuana helps in improving symptoms.
- lifestyle modifications include avoiding smoking, alchohol, staying positive.

About physical therapy and spine manipulation techniques, there is need to discuss with trained medical personnel who is familiar with those techniques.

Hope I helped you. I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Wishing you good health.

I am very familiar with treatments for adhesive arachnoiditis. My biggest problem right now, other than the huge loss of pain medication, is my upset thermostat. I don't know how to deal with the continuous hot flashes and night sweats. Is there anything, either natural or prescription, that would help with this particular symptom? I am losing weight, get no sleep, and am miserable during the day because of the hot flashes. I wake up about 7-8 times, all night long, soaking wet and freezing. Then I can't get back to sleep. I am TIRED!!! I am CLAMMY all the time. I get out of the shower and within five minutes I am soaked again with sweat. And living in Idaho, it isn't due to humidity. PLEASE HELP!!!

Brief Answer:
Anticholinergic drugs may improve your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Hot flashes and excessive sweating can be worsened by female hormones disbalance too, besides adhesive arachnoiditis.

There is need for an estrogen blood level first. If there is estrogen disbalance, correcting it may improve at least partially your symptoms.

Excessive sweating can be treated by anticholinergic drugs ( Benadryl, Atropine, etc.)

Since these are prescription drugs, their use should be discussed with your treating Doctor.

Hope I helped you. Best regards and good health.
