What Causes Extreme Chapping Of Lips?

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, About 6 months ago I developed extreme chapping of my lips. I went to the Dermatolgist and he gave me a topical to be applied 2x daily. I have done this faithfully but the condition is still very much with me. Any ideas as to what might be causing this and how I can get rid of it once and for all? I am 72 and otherwise I seem to be in pretty good health. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
May be a Lichen- 6 months history.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

6 months is a long time for any condition to continue.
As per your history , treatment history of Topicort this looks to be a condition like lichen or so.

You may need a biopsy under local anesthesia to get an exact diagnosis for the management of the lip condition.
You may also go for second opinion of another dermatologist for second opinion, biopsy and further management.
Please stop using any local applications as the steroid applied change the character of the disease and makes a diagnosis difficult.

You may please ask for a therapeutic dosage of Vitamin A and D- this helps in healing and continue with as anti-oxidants.

You may also attach a good quality photograph to this question .
The ''Visual'' impression is very important part of such conditions.
