What Causes Exertion Induced Rashes On Abdomen And Legs?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: Just wondering what could be wrong with me if anything. I actually went to a doctor 2 days ago and had lab work done for this. I have had a hive-like rash come and go since end of XXXXXXX mainly on abdomen and legs. Sometimes the rash can be associated with join pain. Also, I have noticed with the rash on my legs, some swelling and muscle pain beneath the red spots. They are not any particular shape or flaky or discharge. The get better with rest, usually after 1 day. I notice the rash will come after exertion, especially after working. I am a nurse, working nights, 12 hour shift. I have been allergy skin tested, negative. I have no other symptoms, just rash and joint/muscle pain.

Brief Answer:
May be exertion induced rash

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXX,

I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.

It seems that you have exertion induced rash. Exertion can cause release of histamine from mast cells. It is possible that the long shifts that you are doing might be causing damage to the muscles.

The muscle damage causes the release of histamine which leads to rash. Some of the symptoms of this are:
Rash
Itching
Rarely difficulty in breathing

You can manage this with antihistamines and with regular massage. The regular massage will help you prevent injury to the muscles. If you plan to take antihistamines, please see a doctor to get anti-histamines.

If you start getting severe symptoms, you need to see a doctor to control the difficulty in breathing or the rash continues for more than a week.

I hope this answered your query. Please post a follow up if you have further questions.
