Question: Hi dr. My 4month old baby cries a lot before sleeping and this happens every 2-3 hrs during the day. I have to rock him, swing him to sleep everytime. This is really tiresome plus I have to join office in 2 months and am afraid he will do the same then. And it will be really difficult. Please suggest what to do

Brief Answer:
Burping may help.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. It is possible that the child cries due to the discomfort caused due to abdominal distension. You should burp the baby for at least 15-20 mins after each feed. All you need to do is to hold the baby head end elevated for this duration. The extra air taken in would escape and the milk will not regurgitate back from the stomach to the food pipe. You can also try giving Colicaid Drops if the child is crying excessively.

However, the child could also be seeking a personal touch before going to sleep. I understand that it might be tiresome, but the development of a child is through proper interaction with the surroundings, including the persons around (especially the mother).

Unfortunately there is no shortcut. I understand that you need to go to work. But in that case you need to find a good caregiver who would be able to fill in the gap when you are not there by the side of the baby.

Let me know if you have further queries.

Regards
