What Causes Excessive Belching And Burping?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: I have had excessive belching and burping with anything eaten for about two weeks. Excessive gas after every meal or snack. Anti-acids help but very little at times. I started taking enzymes and they seem to help a little, but the symptoms still occur.

Brief Answer:
Diet modification might help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such symptoms can indicate acid reflux disease, stomach inflammation, peptic ulcer or/and Helicobacter Pylori infection. Especially that this symptoms have appeared without any diet change, new medicines intake (correct me if I`m wrong). If you do have also abdominal pain or at least discomfort, gallstones should be also considered.
Enzymes intake generally helps in case of chronic pancreas insufficiency.

In some cases, belching and burping can be triggered by factors not associated with any stomach disease. Due to stress, fast eating, chewing gum, smoking, drinking carbonated drinks, loose dentures, the air is being swallowed. Such condition is called aerophagia.

I suggest you to modify your diet at first. Please try to avoid any fatty foods, spicy foods, fried foods, coffee (very important!), alcohol, chocolate, orange juices. If you do smoke, please try to avoid it. Same with chewing gum and carbonated drinks.
If this wont help, you should consult gastrologist and have gastroscopy done.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
