What Causes Elevated Vitamin B12 Levels?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Oct 2016
Question: My Vitamin
b12 level is 1247. I do not take any supplement and am puzzled as to why the level is so high. Are there any worrisome health implications related to this. (I am a 70 year old male, in excellent health, and with no apparent symptoms.)

Brief Answer:
very unlikely linked to underlying liver or blood disorder

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM,

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Here your blood level of Vitamin B12 is slightly high (but not too high) and I do not think there is much significance since this vitamin B12 level become significant only when it goes beyond 2500 or 3000.

Also, US FDA has not approved any toxic upper levels of Vitamin B12 and this mild elevation is very unlikely linked to underlying liver or blood disorder.

Since vitamin b12 is a essential vitamin and it comes only from the animal source, increased meat or dairy products consumption may also lead to mild high level of vitamin B12.

Further,I would suggest you to re-check vitamin B12 level after 1 week with fasting blood sample in the same laboratory.

In case if the result remains same,I will advise you to undergo routine blood works, liver and kidney function tests for a safer side and seek advise from physician.

But the possibility of some liver, kidney or blood disorder to mildly high vitamin b12 is very unlikely,so do not worry about it.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra
