What Causes Elevated Serum Level?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: I questioned you this afternoon about an elevated serum level. Mine was 9. in July 2014,8.5 in July 2014 and now it is 8.3. I appreciated your answer this afternoon but, I am a worrier so am still thinking about it. I have researched a lot on line and every site I have been on states that 8.3 is normal......some even say 8.5 is normal. The clinic I go to states the range is 6.4 to 8.2. Why would that be different????? It looks to me like every-place else I would be normal at 8.3.

Brief Answer:
There can be slight difference in standardization protocols followed.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Your question has been posted in a common pool where your previous doctor might not have been available and hence I am taking up your question. Let me assure you that everytime you have tested for serum protein, it has come in the normal range and so I would not worry about it. Different laboratories use different reagents and sample kits where the standardizations might be slightly different and hence there might be a difference in the accepatable range stated.
I will insist you to relax. Let me further mention that we treat patients and not reports. Even if there is a difference in investigation reports, unless there is a definite clinical implication, nothing needs to be done about it.
I hope you understand.
Regards
