What Causes Elevated Ammonia Levels Post Bariatric Surgery?
Question: I just had bariatric surgery six weeks ago (gastric sleeve) and within two weeks i was back in hospital with high ammonia levels. 197. Then ER retested and said it was down to 67. They didn't test ammonia after that just concerned about my narcolepsy.
A week later i have my PCP check ammonia and its 185 and i'm experiencing confusion with lots of mistakes at work, missed appts, etc. despite my use of methylphenidate which used to work great. Noone has treated the ammonia problem and i'm wondering if methylphenidate is problem for the liver also.

Both Methylphenidate and sleeve gastrectomy can produce derangement of liver function. But it is not usual. Please upload your full liver function test. If there is any liver inflammation it would require to be managed.
You can reduce the ammonia level by decreasing the protein content of your food.
