What Causes Elevated CRP And WBC Count?

Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with potts spine 2 years back in 2013 with minor multiple compression of vertebraes and psoas abscess, which was drained and resolved with 12 months of kochs treatment, but the blood reports in these 2 years always showed elevated wbc and crp. My lungs were always normal, never showed any scares in xrays, ct scan and bronchoscopy NO TB infection in lungs was ever detected.

At present after 2 years at a medical check up my crp was 26 and wbc 16000, I was given tablets clarithromycin and levoflaxin for a period of 2 weeks, but the counts did not show any improvements so assuming that it is some fungal or bacterial infection I was put into IV treatment for 10 days after which My crp was normal 6 mg/l and wbc 11000 with variconazole and meropenem.. It's been more than a week after being discharged and crp has elevated dramatically to 96mg/l and wbc to 13800, what could be the cause? I did very heavy exercises during this period.

There is a possibility that what happened to me 2 years back was never Potts spine as I had no symptoms of TB whatsoever, even doctors second to it, it could have been some other Degenerative disease or osteomylitis Bacterial infection, but that's my opinion.

Brief Answer:
Get done blood culture and PCT.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Raised CRP and counts suggestive of infection or inflammation in the body.
You responded with antifungal and higher antibiotic.
So possibility of fungal infection or bacterial infection is more.
So better to get done blood culture and PCT (procalcitonin).
Blood culture will isolate the causative organism. PCT is highly specific for bacterial infection. So if it is raised than possibility of bacterial infection is more.
Also get done MRI of spine to rule out recurrence of pots spine.
Please let me know
