What Causes Elevated Bilurubin And AST Numbers?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: I have elevated Bilurubin numbers (3.4) and elevated AST numbers. I take Humira and azathioprine for Crohn's disease. The numbers have been elevated for the last two years but significantly so in the last 6 months. I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease 1 year ago. Is there a connection between Humira and elevated liver enzymes/fatty liver disease?

Brief Answer:
Yes Humira can cause liver enzymes to raise

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Yes, Humira can affect the liver and cause the liver enzymes to raise.

But there are many different causes for liver enzymes raise. Having Crohn's disease, you are prone for the following liver related disorders.
Crohn's diease can cause
1. Asymtomatic elevation of liver enzymes
2. Can be associated with Primary scleroing cholangitis ( which can increase the liver enzymes)
3. Can be associated with fatty liver
4, Can be associated with auotimmune hepatitis ( which can increase the liver enzymes)

I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Hi Dr. R.K.,

I was diagnosed with fatty liver last year but primary sclerosing colangitis was ruled out. I also do not have autoimmune hepatitis. Would removing myself from Humira positively impact my liver numbers, or would concerns over the potential end of my remission from Crohns disease outweigh the potential damage to my liver that is occurring at the present time?

Brief Answer:
AST,ALT increased

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Your AST and ALT are raised.
As said earlier both Crohn's disease and Humira can alter liver function.
If the symptoms of Crohn's disease are under control you can discuss with your doctor about stopping Humira.

Dr.R.K.
