What Causes Elevated AST And ALT Levels

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: I had some pre-op blood work done for a surgery next Tuesday and my AST and ALT levels were elevated and they automatically accused me of drinking too much. I said that can't me true, but I have been work out a lot lately and they still accused me of drinking to much alcohol. I am insulted by this and researched that working out and breaking down muscle can cause elevated AST and ALT levels. Also, I have a retest in 5 days, if I don't work out, will they levels go down? They are threatening to cancel the surgery. It is Oral Surgery and I have been scheduled for this for 1 1/2 months. I don't won't to be in braces for another month and a half, due to there incompetence. Please advise

Brief Answer:
Please specify the values

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for writing in.

Normal AST value is 10 to 40 units per liter and ALT between 7 to 56 units per liter.

Yes that right that weightlifting results in profound increases in liver function tests in a healthy man.

First of all I want to know: what were your values of ALT and AST in reports and what type of surgery you have to undergo because you said that they have to remove the braces.
Only removal of normal braces doesn't require any typical surgery.

Don't worry if the level is increased due to exercise then in one week it will come down if you stop the workout.

If you can upload the reports and picture of your mouth it will be easier for me to come to an exact conclusion.

Dr Shesh
