Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: egg sized lump at top of calf /in back of knee. after walking or working all day it really bothers me. Went to ER they did Doppler to make sure it was not a blood clot. That came back normal. Went to PC she saw the lump and thought is had something to do with knee, they did MRI of knee, that came back normal. I leg is very uncomfortable. it extends down in calf and up into back of thigh. You can see the swelling on knee area and calf but MRI came back normal???? What do I do know??

Brief Answer:
Baker's cyst or a lipoma or ??

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

To recapitulate the history:50 years /F - uncomfortable feeling and egg sized soft tissue lump at the top of the calf / in the back of the knee - normal doppler - MRI of the knee, normal - What to do now ???

I can think of the few diagnosis depending upon the history you have noted:
-Backer's Cyst; although connected to the knee by a very thin stalk, the MRI of the knee joint may be perfectly normal. It is bit difficult to understand why the MRI has not picked this up or not reported.
-Can be a lipoma
-Can be something that the General or Orthopedic Surgeon can tell on physical examination.

I would advise you the following:
-Since there is a definite lump, there is associated discomfort, the best way to get a proper diagnosis would a second opinion of a Orthopedic Surgeon. On physical examination He can certainly get a clinical diagnosis and investigate you further and advise accordingly.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis and treatment.
