What Causes Edema In Left Foot After Foot Surgery?

Posted on Wed, 4 Nov 2015
Question: I have edema in my left foot after having foot surgery this summer. The Dr. said my foot would be swollen for 6 months to 1 year. I am on a food plan and have to weigh weekly. My sponsor is penalizing me for a 5 lb wt GAIN. With a swollen foot...2 sizes wider than my right foot would a 5 lb. wt gain be reasonable?

Brief Answer:
I have reviewed your problem, let me assist you

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry that your sponsor is not empathetic to your water retention problem. If you are saying your edema is in your one foot, 2 pounds might be more reasonable, but you know their is no hardcore accurate answer to this.

However XXXXXXX are we missing the real problem? Your attention should be focused on keeping your weight down regardless of water retention. Your doctor doesn't want you retaining any more fluid than possible.

I realize that you are on a food plan. How much sodium are you allowed on this plan and are you reading labels and following sodium restrictions? Perhaps there is a way to control your swelling by reducing unneeded sodium in your diet. It is not uncommon for doctors to restrict sodium to 1500-2300 mg per day with 2300 mg sodium equal to 1 tsp of sodium chloride or salt.

What diet did the doctor put you on? Have I answered you question or are there other health concerns you would like to discuss??Feel free to write me again if I have not answered your question or you would like to clarify my answer. Otherwise, Please rate the query and close it out.

Good luck with getting your circulation back, your lymphatic system flowing, the edema going down and you getting back on your feet! XXXXXXX Shattler, MS,RDN
