What Causes Early Morning Heartburn And Nausea?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Jun 2015
Question: Hello,

Each time I wake up from bed, I get heartburn, nausea. I drink a lot of fluid then to neutralise it, but it takes a lot of time. Most of the time I sleep upside down, could that be a cause? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
may be due to GERD

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Heartburn and nausea are normally related to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux).

GERD symptoms can be worse in early morning or late at night.

The symptoms can be worse with the use of some foods eg spicy, acidic, fatty foods, big meals.

Treatment involves lifestyle changes and medication.
The lifestyle changes include: (1)using small meals frequently instead of large meals

(2)waiting 2 hours after eating before laying down

(3)reduce or eliminate spicy/acidic/fatty foods including citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, mint, caffeine, chocolate

(4)weight loss of any excess weight.

Excess weight presses on the stomach and worsens reflux

(5)medications such as nexium, prilosec, prevacid or protonix

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Hello,

I am actually underweight, 43kg, 5 feet 4 inch, 28 years. I actually tried Nexium for over a couple of months. It didn't improve the situation. Each time I wake up (day or night) I feel nausea. I normally feel nauseated every evening. Does the symptoms match GERD? Is there any test like blood test I can do to determine what I have?

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
blood test for h pylori

Detailed Answer:
HI

The fact that the symptoms occur on evenings are in keeping with GERD.

There are no blood tests for GERD specifically. There is a test to check for H pylori, a bacteria that can sometimes be present in the stomach that can make reflux symptoms worse.

There are also imaging (such as endoscopy or barium meal) that can take a look at the esophagus and stomach.

Since nexium did not work for you , you may need to try one of the other medications.

Please feel free to ask any other quesetions
