Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: What could be the cause of my ears suddenly being stopped up? It is affecting my left ear more than the right. I also have a slight ear ache...it started today. Began with a headache, but quickly moved to my ear(s).

Brief Answer:
List of most commonly observed causes for such a presentation

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am not exactly sure what you meant by 'stopped up', but I am guessing you meant your ears are clogged, or closed, or stuffed up?

If so, this along with your other symptoms of a headache, and mild ear ache usually points towards ear infections. But let me go ahead and list some of the most common causes for such a presentation:

+Swimming: One of the most common causes for such a presentation, and usually even results in ear infections requiring medical attention
+Migraine headaches can also at times present in such a manner, along with the other typical migraine headaches
+Sinus headaches
+Sinus infection or aggravation of symptoms
+Middle ear or outer ear infections
+Eustachian tube dysfunction: That results in poor drainage of the tube, resulting in increased pressure and so on
+Allergic reactions can cause a serious of symptoms including the ones experienced by you
+Tumors: Rare and the least likely cause, but yet has to be ruled out if other causes have been ruled out
and a few others.

As you may have seen from the above listed causes, you will need a doctors consultation and a few investigations to confirm the cause and accordingly get treated. Please do schedule an appointment with an ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist for further management of your condition. I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
