What Causes Dyslexia In Children?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: My 5 year old son is in Pre-kindergarten. (Indian, living in Africa). It has been noticed that even though he is quite active and energetic child and learns quickly, there are some symptoms we are worried about:
(a) He is able to right numbers from 1 to 100 but occasionally writes letters like 6, 9, 5, 7 as mirror-ed.
(b) For alphabets he is generally correct but once in a while he mixes up 'p' and 'b'. He is also able to write basic word like cat, mat, rat etc.

We have spoken the school teachers and they say its normal and he is able to generally learn and pick-up things pretty fast. He even got the award for the best performance in his class this year. His school curriculum is XXXXXXX where the teachers say at his age he is not expected to develop such writing skills. (Unlike the XXXXXXX school curriculum where children at age of 5 are quite advanced when it comes to their writing skills)

Could these be early warning signs of dyslexia?
Are there any ways or tests at home by which we can determine the condition?

Regards,

doctor

Brief Answer:
Writing skills

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
According to all medical and cognition authorities, he is displaying writing skills that are normal for this age. This is in no way a sign of dyslexia nir is there any need to have him tested. In about a year's time, with continued practice, these errors will be corrected. Until then, however, this is normal for age.
