Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Hello, I have seborrheic dermatitis of scalp and with shampoos such as Nizoral etc. It stays under control. But because of the shampoo usage my scalp feels dead, what is the best moisturiser for scalp, so that the skin doesn't become too oily and increase my seborrheic dermatitis. Also apart from Nizoral, which other shampoo should be used in general so that it is not very harsh

Brief Answer:
You could use 2% ketoconazole shampoos

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to healthcare magic.

I understand from your query that you are having dandruff problem.

Nizoral contains 1 % ketoconazole which is less than the recommended strength for anti-dandruff shampoos. It also does not have added conditioners and that is the reason your hair becomes dry.

You could benefit from using 2 % Ketoconazole shampoo with added conditioners like panthenol. Most of the companies now have added conditioners. You could try from any brand like Scalpe lotion, Triatop lotion, etc.

Use it weekly once as maintenance to prevent dandruff form coming back.

Hope this helps you.

Take care.

Dear Doctor,

That was not my question. My question is:

1. Which other shampoo to use for day to day use apart from ketoconazole shampoo that is chemical free and good for scalp
2. After using ketoconazole my scalp becomes dry and scaly, which moisturizer to apply after shampoo

Brief Answer:
You could use a regular shampoo meat for normal to dry hair

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I am sorry that I misinterpreted your question.

1. You could use any over the counter shampoo meant for normal to dry hair on a regular basis. In general, shampoos meant for oily hair are harsh. Shampoos meant for dry to normal hair are milder. You could also try Tricleanz shampoo which is mild and is available in pharmacies. However, no shampoo is free from chemicals. If you are looking for chemical free solutions to cleanse your hair, you should go for herbal remedies like soapnut powder. But this can dry your hair.

2. It is difficult to apply a moisturizing lotion over the scalp. Hence, I would suggest you to apply warm oil( coconut/ almond) about half an hour before you shampoo your hair. This will moisturize the scalp. But leaving oil overnight on the scalp will worsen dandruff as it will promote the yeast causing dandruff.

The dryness and flaking will also improve if you switch to an anti-dandruff shampoo with conditioners.

Hope this answers your queries.

If you have any further queries, I will be glad to answer.

Regards,
Dr. Johny Chacko
