What Causes Dry Nose And Sore Lips When On Synthyroid?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, Dr. Rynne, I started taking a variety of supplements for my hypothyroidism/hashimotos/goiter; I am still on Synthroid. Once I began taking the supplements, I began to feel much better. However, my nose has been extremely dry, and my bottom lip has begun to peel and is very sore. I thought it may be too much Vitamin A, but when I stopped the Vit. A, nothing changed. Any ideas what it could be? And it is only the left nostril, not the right. Very strange.

Brief Answer:
Could be Hypervitaminosis A, dehydration or local pathology to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Greetings.
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic.

Probably the dryness you are experiencing in your left Nostril and lower lip could be due to Hypervitaminosis A (increased levels in the body). Since you have already stopped Vit A, This will take some time to return back to normal levels in the body. Here is what I would advise you for :
1. Consult a ENT surgeon to rule out any local pathology
2. Stop Vitamin A and E. These are very high (massive) doses. You may just start with multivitamin tablets which contain Vitamin B complex only.
3. Drink plenty of fluid. Sometimes dehydration presents with dry nose and mouth.
4. Stop all kinds of aerated soft drinks and alcohol as well coffee and tea. They can lead to dehydration.
5. Take steam inhalation twice a day. It will help to expel nasal contents which is otherwise difficult in case of dry nostrils.
6. Apply simple plain vaseline jelly around mouth and nostrils. Prevent all kinds of cosmetics etc.. including lip balm. You may try Aquapore if it suits you.

Follow these and let me know the update. Also do let me know for any additional information anytime.

Take care.

Thank you for getting back to me, Dr. XXXXXXX Appreciate that! I stopped applying the pure Vitamin E to my lips, and stopped two of my supplements that contain high does of Vitamin A, and E.

I only drink plain water or water with lemon. That's it for liquid. No coffee, teas, juices, or wines.

The other suggestions that you gave, I will do as well.

Thank you for responding again. I will update you in a few weeks.

Enjoy your day,

XXXX
