What Causes Dizziness And Weakness After Having Metronidazole?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 Jan 2015
Question: I was prescribed metronidazole for a dental infection ( 3x400mg daily). After taking 3 tablets I had to stop since I felt so tired, dizzy, confused, weak and almost impossible for me to get out of bed.
Even if I stopped taking metronidazole 3 days ago I still feel very unwell and the side effects don't seem to get easier. What should I do to flash the drug out of the system? Is this normal? Please help

Brief Answer:
It should subside in a week's time.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.

Weakness, nausea, vomiting, sometimes loose motions and metallic taste are the adverse effects of metronidazole. Nothing to be panic, it is self limiting and will subside within a week. You have to consume lot of water (tender coconut, if available) and nutritious food. As the drug is already metabolized you need not consider another agent. Wait for another 3 days, everything will be fine.

Hope my answer will help you, take care.

Thank you very much for your accurate response Doctor XXXXXXX
I have spent another day in bed today feeling exhausted. I'm drinking loads of water and I'm resting.
I'm just a bit worried since it doesn't seem to get any better. I'm tired till the point that it's impossible for me to leave the house. I only feel better if I lie down.
The symptoms started soon after I took the antibiotics so they should be sides effects of Meteonidazole but in case I'm still unwell tomorrow should I ask for a blood test?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
general physician, intravenous fluids

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your reply.
I suggest you to consult a general physician and take an opinion, since you are telling you are not able to go out.
If you are feeling too weak then they might give you intravenous fluids.
So consult a general physician and take an opinion.
I hope my answer will help you. Take care.
