What Causes Dizziness And Imbalance?

Question: Hello,
I would like your help. The last 2 weeks I suffer from dizziness, lightheadedness and feelings of imbalance. I was a completely healthy individual until a month ago that I started a birth control pill. I have tried to use birth control pills 2 times in the past and both times I suffered from severe depression. This time, the pill affected me in a different way. It caused me anxiety attacks. I had fast heartbeat, tingling sensation on my face and felt like my tongue was swollen. I couldn’t sleep at night, I was scared and I kept thinking that I am going to have a heart attack. I went 2 times to the emergency room, to a neurologist, general practitioner and ENT. The ENT realised that the symptoms I was describing were psychosomatic from stress, so he suggested I stop the pill and gave me Deanxit and Xanax so I can calm down. The next few days I was feeling great until the lightheadedness and dizziness started. I had a blood test, including a thyroid and iron test, that showed that everything was good. Also, the ENT checked my ears and found them fine and he suggested that I should continue deanxit as he believes my dizziness is from stress. However, I keep taking deanxit, I am not stressed at all but my lightheadedness persists every day and it really decreases my life quality and happiness. Also, I had a body composition analysis at my dietitian and showed that I am dehydrated so I don’t know if my dizziness has to do with that or with the anxiety phase that I had or with deanxit. What do you think? Please help.

Brief Answer:
I agree with your ENT

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concern about the dizziness and other symptoms.

From the available history and laboratory investigations I am convinced with your ENT about the psychosomatic reason for current symptoms.

Regarding lightheadedness I feel it could be side effect of Xanax or deanxit which is short acting benzodiazepine (xanax). I feel so because this symptom appeared following prescription of xanax and deanxit. And this is one of the common side effect of your current prescription.

I have the following recommendations for you.
Firstly you need to take care of stress by multiple methods like using yoga and meditation, taking frequent break in your routine life, avoiding junk food and taking lot of fluids including lime water in morning.

Secondly see a psychiatrist in your city. Xanax is only temporary medication for control of anxiety. For long term you need another group of medication like SSRI. Fluoxetine is the most widely used medication for this purpose. You need to talk to him to prescribe the SSRI for long term management of anxiety. For short term I prefer clonotril over xanax because of its long half life and less chance of light headedness. You can talk to him about the same.

'Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help".
Thanks

Thank you very much for your reply. Today i had my last pill of Deanxit (took it for 1 month). Could you please let me know when, approximately, the side effects of the medication will go away? Does it take a long time? I can't wait to be lightheadedness and dizziness - free. It has been a horrible month for me.

Brief Answer:
It will take less than one week

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

The side effect of deanxit are short lived once it is stopped. Generally it last for one to three days but maximum duration never extend beyond one week after the last dose.

I expect that by tomorrow you will able to feel difference in your light headedness and dizziness.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.
Thanks and regards
Dr Ashok Kumar
