What Causes Dizziness And Acid Reflux While On Protonix?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 May 2017
Question: I took the 40 mg dose of the generic for Protonix yesterday and today. Yesterday I was very sleepy during the morning hours. Today I became dizzy in the morning and about an hour after lunch, then later in the afternoon I became very weak after the dizziness wore off. The weakness wore off after my evening meal. Also when I was dizzy in the morning my blood pressure was 111 over 46. It gradually got higher. I have had a cough because of acid reflux and am trying to find the right drug to take. I had such a bad day especially with the weakness that I am concerned about taking it again tomorrow. I do take Sotalol and am concerned about an interaction with that, which may be causing the low blood pressure. I also take Xarelto and did cough up blood after trying Nexeum after two days. I don't know if these side effects I'm having lesson over time or not. I can't take the other drugs for Gerd which I think are H2 inhibitors as antihistamines have caused the irregular heartbeat when I have taken them for more than a day or two. I have used a tsp. of vinegar in a cup of water which will stop the cough but I'm concerned about possibly having to take that again later in the day. I do chew gum after taking the above which soothes the throat as I know the vinegar probably irritates the throat. I've wandered about using a little baking soda in a little water after the vinegar water to soothe the throat but don't know if that will raise my BP, as my BP tends to go up late in the afternoon.

Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Protonix (Pantoprazole) is a safe medication and has got no significant drug interaction with Sotalol.

The muscle weakness is a common adverse effect and usually subsides with regular use. If its severe the CPK levels can be done and the drug can be stopped completely to see for improvement.

I would advise addition of a pro kinetic like metoclopramide to esomeprazole.

Apple cider vinegar would be a better alternative to plain vinegar as it helps in both indigestion and GERD.

The BP you mentioned is well below normal limit and a rise of 10 to 20 mm hg would not be significant.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks

Thank you for your answer Dr. XXXXXXX I was concerned about my blood pressure at one point of 111/46 being too low. Could there be any danger in that? My pulse was 64 at the time. Also do you know if my using a little baking soda in a little water will raise my blood pressure as I tend to have a problem with my blood pressure going up at the end of the day to something like 150 or 160 over around 60, especially if I consume salt to much of a degree at all. When it goes up it also is that high the next morning. I don't know how baking soda compares with salt as far as having a tendency to raise blood pressure.

Also I did have vivid dreams, bordering on nightmares last night after taking the 40mg dose of Protonix (generic) and was wandering the cause and any concern for that.

Sorry, I forgot and failed to use the link.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

The blood pressure fluctuation occurs in labile BP. Soda bicarbonate consumption should be avoided or tapered to half or 1/3 or 1/4 to avoid a BP spike of 160 systolic as that is clear hypertensive stage 2 range.

As I stated earlier, nightmares again is a very rare phenomenon with Protonix. If you are having continued adverse effects with protonix then you may stop it. In my view Protonix doesn't directly cause such effects.

Wishing you best of health
