Posted on Tue, 14 Oct 2014
Question: My Father, 84yo, decorated disabled VET was misdiagnosed with gout 8 month's ago. As his pain levels skyrocket and his strength and mobility decreases rapidly I am curious to know what the most common type of arthritis (or other condition frequently misdiagnosed as gout) should has never been tested for gout until last week and the tests ruled out gout. I am told that his current Dr. cannot admit him into a hospital to began looking for the true culprit responsible for his medical condition. The soonest appointment with an Internal Medicine Specialist / Rheumatologist is Nov 23,2014
Thank you for any suggestions, you may have, to ask his Dr. to consider.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
There are many conditions which mimic gout:
1. Rheumatoid Arthritis
2. Reactive Arthritis.
3. Psuedogout.
Actually gout usually presents with severe pain , redness and swelling in toe.
Moreover its not like that if serum Uric acid is normal it is not gout.
If you could provide me his details and complaints that he has and has I can help you better.
