What Causes Difficulties In Swallowing And GERD Post An Endoscopy?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Jan 2017
Question: For several years I have had intermittent trouble swallowing foods (no trouble with liquids). I had some heartburn/gerd so my doctor suggested taking an acid-reducer. This seemed to work but the swallowing trouble still came and went. I underwent an upper endoscopy which tested for h.pylori and did a physical examination and all was normal. The problem went away for quite a while but has returned. It's almost as it I am now also getting a gagging sensation when food is in my mouth, and then need to chew a lot to ensure I am able to swallow properly. It seems to happen near the end of a meal as opposed to the start. I now believe that is might be anxiety related. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do?

Brief Answer:
If anxiety-related, then anxiety treatment is mandatory

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. From you well explained history, here are my suggestions:

+Continue with the acid-reducer in case you have/had discontinued it
+Visit your doctor for a blood evaluation (H. pylori blood test), or stool, or breath test; which can raise doubt for gastritis induced by H. pylori; treatment shall be directed accordingly once a diagnosis is made
+As you have a history of anxiety, I would say dysphagia could in fact be associated with the anxiety, but this can be assumed only once your other gastrointestinal conditions have been ruled out as the cause.

If at all anxiety has been confirmed as the cause, the use of xanax (alprazolam) or klonopin (clonazepam) depending on your medical history, would be essential.

I hope this information helps. Please do not hesitate to write to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
