What Causes Diarrhea Post Colonoscopy?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: My husband is 56 and had his first colonoscopy today. Four polyps were found and one (about fingertip size) was removed. He is having very loose bowel movements since eating a meal after being released, and each time is seeing quite a bit of bright red blood, enough to turn the toilet bowl water red, and passing some clots. He takes Plavix every day, but stopped four days ago.

Brief Answer:
Rush back to the ER/ Hospital.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
To recapitulate : Male/56 - colonoscopy today - one polyp removed - loose stools with bright red blood and clots - On Plavix (Clopidogrel) - stopped 4 days ago.

My thoughts and advise:
- The loose stools with blood and clot is due to irritation of the colon by blood hence occurring.
- Needs to go back to the Doctor/ER, needs admission.
- To find the cause, whether this is due to bleeding from the surgical site or due to Clopidogrel effect still persisting (anti-platelet activity) so that further treatment is possible.

I hope this answer helps your husband to have an early diagnosis and proper treatment.
