default
Posted on Mon, 7 Jul 2014
Question: Hello Doctor,
This is concern regarding my 2 years old baby boy (born in Jun2012) . He is having good health. From the day he born carries overall good physic and having very good progress for reaching his age development milestones . But people around me are saying that he is slow with his speech as compared to the other child of his age .
He can speak almost 60 different words and learning some new words by the 3-4 days gap. All are of almost two letters such as pappa, mumma ,dada, nana, cow, chikku ,baba etc. We try to help him by speaking with him and showing rhymes etc.
My friend's child (boy) who is of his age can speak even sentenses and almost all words in marathi.
I want him to learn on his own rather please suggest technique to use for helping him with his verbal skills, or Should I be concern about this and go for speech therapist?

Brief Answer:
Suggestion on language development

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

I understand your concern. I appreciate that you are trying to teach him and encourage him by putting on rhymes etc.

I have few questions and suggestions for you -
1. What is his birth weight and current weight?
2. When did he start walking?
3. Did he cry immediately after birth or did he require any special assistance to take the first breath?
4. How long does he see television or tablet or cartoons per day?
5. Did any one of the parents' had a speech delay as children?

Suggestions:
1. I suggest you are doing great by singing rhymes to him.
2. Do not use tablet or computer or TV or laptop for doing that.
3. Do not force him too much comparing him with others.
4. He might get benefited by speech therapy, but before that kindly get back with the answers to my above questions.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Brief Answer:
Language development - Normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi....thank you for your trust in me.

Your kid is not abnormal. But I want you to understand that this is a statement based on his current developmental progress and his birth details and growth.

Never compare your kid with any of the others because there might be a lot of reasons for it. By my age some people receive Nobel prize, and there is no point in me lamenting that I didn't get it. I am what I am. Similarly, your kid too is normal.

Moreover if the kid is speaking almost 60 different words and learning some new words by the 3-4 days gap, I don't think you should worry.

You can wait another 3 months and if still you are not happy with him. please get back to me.
