Question: Hello, I had a miscarriage on 20 th of February 2014. Bleed for week then stopped. Had sex on the 20 day of the cycle. I didn't get my period and did not have any pregnancy test. I checked with the ovulation test today and it is positive. Am I pregnant ?

Brief Answer: DO ONE HOME PREGNANCY TEST FIRST. FOLLOW ADVICES. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments: 1) First of all, you should know that beta-hCG comes down to NORMAL within 4 to 6 weeks following miscarriage. In this case, I suggest to undergo one home pregnancy test to check current status of pregnancy and after that, one blood test for beta-hCG is required to estimate the value (whether LOW or HIGH). 2) Period usually starts within 6 to 8 weeks following miscarriage and late period may be due to hormonal imbalance. Most women get this type of presentation. Positive ovulation test DOESN'T mean that you are pregnant and you do the test today following sex on 20th day of cycle. You must DO home pregnancy test for evaluation of pregnancy. Lastly, you need to undergo one ULTRASOUND scan and repeat the blood test for beta-hCG after 1 week for confirmation of pregnancy and to avoid FALSE POSITIVE pregnancy test result (due to miscarriage). Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query. Wish your good health and take care yourself. Brief Answer: DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for follow up query. Ovulation test can detect both hormone (LH and beta-hCG) and pregnancy test depends on beta-hCG hormone only. However, positive ovulation test is NOT a confirmatory test of pregnancy following miscarriage. False Positive result may be obtained. One home pregnancy test will be worthwhile in this case. After that, you can undergo one blood test for beta-hCG to estimate its value and do one Trans Vaginal ultrasound scan (TVS) for evaluation of pregnancy. It will be more accurate and confirmatory test. Hope, it helps for you. Kindly, close the discussion. Good luck and all the best. Regards, Dr Soumen
