What Causes Constipation And Severe Abdominal Pain After Stopping Miralax?
Question: Hi I have been I have been having extra large bowels every time I urinate. I eat very little
I do have IBS and.use Miramax 1/2 cap full q.o.d
. I eat very little because of the IBS . If I don't take my Miramax I .end up with severe abdominal pain . I will have episodes r constipation . Please give some idea what might be going on . I tried cutting my dose of Miramax and immediately got abdominal pain.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Miralax/ miramax contains polyethylene glycol and is an osmotic laxative.
2. It helps to produce bowel movement by drawing more water to the waste matter in colon.
3. IBS is known to cause constipation and miralax was given for that. So, if you stop, episodes of constipation may occur due to absence of laxative effect.
4. Miralax can produce abdominal pain and cramps normally as a side effect. However, when its stopped and if you are getting abdominal pain, need to look into gas formation and colon distension. Food products getting metabolized and formation of gas due to bacterial fermentation, which distends the colon, could be the cause of abdominal pain.
5. Try avoiding dairy products completely. Take probiotics and also good hydration. It should stop the pain. Increased soluble fiber from fruits and vegetables, could help in constipation.
