What Causes Constant Throat Pain And Chronic Sore Throat?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: I am not sure what specialist to try now, but I have had on-going throat pain from Globus, to a slight low grade irritation, every day now for 6 months. I have been to ENT's, had an endoscopy to rule out reflux, had a thyroid biopsy to rule out issues with my thyroid, and have absolutely no diagnosis, and don't know where to turn. I get slight relief from my symptoms when I take ativan, but basically I am living with a chronic sore throat. Please help! I had one centimeter nodule on my ithamus, of thyroid which is benign, and the endoscopy showed no signs of reflux.

Brief Answer:
24 hours pH monitoring

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.

Chronic throat pain and globus are extraesophageal symptoms of GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease).
Endoscopy most often is normal in case of GERD.

A 24 hours pH monitoring test may be done to confirm the diagnosis.
Meanwhile you can take Nexium for relief.

Lifestyle modifications is also important,
Avoid coffee, citrus, tomatoes, chocolates and fatty food.
Go to get at least 2-3 hours after food.

I hope that answers your query.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Regards,
Dr.Barani

I tried prevacid 30mg for one month, and it didn't cure the chronic sore throat. A bit of the globus went down, but it didn't cure the sore throat.

Are there better medications?
Should I be taking a stronger dose?

You have given me hope!

I read about the PH monitoring and it says that you have to push a button every time you have a symptom. BUT..I have a symptom, every minute of every day, except when I sleep.

I also don't really get burning..I get more of an irritated throat, and globus!
