What Causes Constant Sharp Pain In Lower Right Abdomen?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Mar 2015
Question: HI - I have had a constant, fairly sharp pain in my lower right abdomen since Friday. The pain was going through to my back but that seems to have stopped. I took some painkillers this morning and the pain died down, but I just did some exercise this evening and it got worse again. The pain stops me breathing fully, yawning and coughing. Could it be my appendix?

Brief Answer:
Appendicitis / Stone in ureter / colitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

To recapitulate: Female / 47 - constant and fairly sharp pain in the right lower abdomen since Friday - pain was going to the back but now stopped - pan died down with pain killers - got worst on exercises this evening - pains stops you breathing fully, yawning and coughing . wants to if this can be appendicitis.

The symptoms you have provided can be due to :
Appendicitis as you are rightly suspecting, particularly in retro-cecal position (behind the cecum or colon).
Colitis on the same side,
Stone in the right ureter with obstruction causing hydroureter and hydronephrosis with or without infection of the urinary tract.

The pain was referring to the back, came back after exercises is noteworthy.

I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Tests of blood, urine and stool.
Ultrasonography to start with and confirmation by a CT scan as many of the problems may be missed in ultrasonography as its limitations.

This will help you to get an appropriate diagnosis to get the plan for further management.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries or if you feel that there is a gap-of-communication.
