Posted on Tue, 20 May 2014
Question: Dear Sir
since almost one week I have a terrible and constant pain in my right hip, but only when I sit or lie down, absolutely not when I walk or stand. I use painkillers nolotil and ibuprofin. however without the desired result. What do you think is it an inflammation or a worn hip ? I am a Dutch male of 77 year and very active.
thank you

I have read your case but you have given very little detail about your pain. I want to know few more things before diagnosing cause of your pain.

1. Is it more in front part of hip or back part?

3. Do you have any history of fall? Do you play any game?

I am waiting for your answer. Please tell me so i can help you as early as possible.

1.Only at the back of the hip and downward the buttock
2.no,not like an electric current, it is a dumb very painful feeling and it does not go away when I alter the position of the right leg. It stops only when I stand up, during the day and night.

Brief Answer:
It looks like pinch nerve

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir,
Thanks for information.

After studying your symptoms it looks to me that it can be a pinch nerve in spine which supplies back part of the hip and buttock. This nerve is pinched due to disc herniation at spine. This pain is not because of hip inflammation as hip disease cause pain on front side and never on back side.

For confirmation, I would suggest you to show it to orthopaedic surgeon and get MRI scan of the spine.

Till you get this report I would suggest you following.
1. Only brufen is not sufficient add other drug like oxycodone.
2. You will need Methylcobal and Pregabalin tablet after discussing with your family doctor.
3. Avoid bending forward or playing.
Keep your leg bend at knee, You will feel less pain.Let me know if you want to ask any other question.

Thanks and take care.
