What Causes Constant Pain In Legs?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Aug 2015
Question: I have aching legs for 8 years, Im in good health for my age (78 ) Ive had various tests including MRI's on my back. Walking is becoming difficult, particularly if I stand still for several minutes or kneel down for a period of time. My GP has concluded the situation is down to my age. My theory is that being over 75 further treatment is not seen as worthwhile. Another thought is the fact I had high doses of Predisalone in the past before having an ileostomy for ulcerative colitis. I understand this drug can affect muscles.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to vitamin and trace elements deficiencies.

Detailed Answer:

Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. It is likely to be due to vitamin and trace elements deficiencies. You are advised to take vitamin and trace elements supplements such as Evion LC. Vitamin D level should be determined and if found low you can take supplements of vitamin D3. You can take analgesic such as ibuprofen for pain relief. You are also advised to undergo colour doppler study of lower limbs to see condition of blood vessels.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

Thank you for your reply.Having looked at related problems I have noticed symptoms of Potts disease. Some of my symptoms fit this condition IE night sweats, back pain, difficult standing and weakness of legs.

There has been a history of TB in my family going back many years. My mother suffered from an early age with abscess's on her elbow and ankle. At the age of 55 she was diagnosed with TB of the ankle which resulted in her having leg amputated. A cousin of mine had lung TB and many years later had similar leg symptoms to my current situation. I lost contact with him so cannot say what happened to him, he is no longer alive. A niece of mine also had TB, I believe it affected her kidneys, she made a good recovery.

As to myself I was suspected of having TB in 1956 while in the RAF. After many tests and X Rays it was concluded my immune system had stopped it. On leaving the RAF the situation showed again on an X Ray and I attended the Chest Clinic of my local hospital annually for 20 years. My thoughts are is it possible for TB to lay dormant and return in my back ?

I look forward to your comments

Brief Answer:
Symptoms doesn't suggest TB

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
Clinical situation you described doesn't points towards TB. However it cannot be completely ruled out. You can investigate for TB by ESR as ESR will be high in TB and MRI of spine and affected region will be useful in diagnosis.

My wife is concerned about using cod liver oil while taking Bendroflumethiazide having noticed on the cod liver oil that it should not be used with the above tablets. Searching the internet she has not found a answer. Thank you for your previous replies.
