What Causes Constant Knee Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: I have constant pain in the knees throughout the day. I tried running for a few days but my style of running was such that I kind of stomped my feet on the ground. Hence, I stopped doing that and I instead walk for about 4 kms a day. I climb up and down atleast 3 flights of stairs once, everyday. What could be the possible reason for the pain?

Brief Answer:
Need details

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXX,

I have read your query.

I would like to know is pain started after starting running or you have pain before as well
Is pain constant or intermittent?
Is pain increased after any activity?
Is pain decreased when you take rest?
Do you have pain only in knee or any other site or joints?

Have you ever checked your vitamin D and B12?
Have you ever done X- ray of knee joints?

Kindly get back to me with details.

Thank you

Hi Dr. Bhagyalaxmi,
Thanks for your response :)
Here are my responses to the questions. Hope it helps:

I had light pain before also. But mostly after I noticed the change in my walking style

The pain is constant these days. When I sit and relax, I notice it. When I am standing, talking or driving, I don't notice the pain.

I don't see any specific activity after which pain is increased. Probably will see now that you mentioned it.

Yes, after waking up I don't feel the pain.

The pain is only on the knees.

I have not checked my vitamin D levels but I hardly get any sunlight these days. I stand for 5-10 minutes in the sun. That is all.

No I have not done X-ray of knee joints

Brief Answer:
Advised anti inflammatory medications

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXX,

According to your description it seems like pain is related to posture or ligament strain. It is increased after starting running.
I suggest you anti inflammatory medications like paracetamol and Ibuprofen combination twice a day after food for 3 days.
If your occupation related to sitting in front of computer, do not sit for long time; try to walk for 5-10 minutes in between work.
Continue taking milk.
If you will not feel better after 3 days then I suggest you visit an orthopedic doctor for clinical examination and get investigations like x ray, vitamin D and vitamin B12.

If you have any queries I will be happy to help you.

Thank you.
