What Causes Constant Hiccups After Back Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Dec 2016
Question: I had back surgery 7 days ago. Since the surgery I have almost constant burping action and in some cases more of a hiccup than a burp. Have stopped morphine and tylonal 3 prescribed after the surgery but the burping/hiccups persist

Brief Answer:
Hello dear. It will resolve with time

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. So the common cause of hiccups post surgery is the minor palsy or irritation of the diaphragm which results in abnormal contraction of its musculature leading to hiccups. You can take some muscle relaxants drug like baclofen or chlorpromazine for a couple of days and you will be alright. You will require a prescription for that.
Thanks and regards
