What Causes Coldness And Cramps In Legs?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Aug 2016
Question: Hi Dr,
I experience 'cold short cramp like feelings' in my legs sometimes when I walk for more than 15min. It does tend to slow me down and make a long walk quite uncomfortable. I have only started experiencing them occasionally in the last 6 months but they are becoming more frequent.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concern.

The cold short cramps you are having in your legs after walking for 15 min could be due to neurological problems (intermittent claudication) or problems with deep vein thrombosis.

As you take magnesium supplement regularly, I advise to run further tests to determine the right cause:
- clinical examination by neurologist
- EMG study
- Doppler ultrasound of legs blood vessels

For the moment, I advise to:
- keep well hydrated ( drink water with OTC ORS)
- do not overexercise
- take oral antiinflammatory medication like ibuprofen

Hope this helps.
