What Causes Cold And Easily Tingling Hands And Feet?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: My hands and feet get cold and they tingle easily. Sometimes they get sweaty/clammy as well. I have done some googling and I read about poor circulation caused by periphery artery disease. This was a sudden onset that I first noticed when I took a beverage out of the fridge. I am going to the doctor next week. What else could cause this? Vitamin Deficiency? I have been on a fitness regime as of the past year and have significantly increased my strength and lowered my body fat through weight ligting and running, biking etc.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to transient decrease in blood flow to the hands and feet.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
The symptoms of cold, tingling, sweats and clammy feeling are due to a decrease in the blood flow to the skin. This is commonly due to excessive secretion of vasoconstricting neurotransmitter/ hormones like adrenaline and nor adrenaline which are secreted into the blood when one is anxious or stressed. Along with that if there is a feeling of not getting enough breathing and the hyperventilation resulting can drive out the blood carbon dioxide and make the problem worse.
A peripheral vascular disease is less likely at your age as it usually starts above the age of 40 and is usually in the legs rather than the hands.
If there is a dark bluish color of the hands a conditon called Raynaud's phenomenon is to be considered.
Vitamin D is not the usual cause for this symptom though low ionised calcium level may occur if there is alkalosis from hyperventilation.
If you have been eating a normal diet and have been getting enough sunshine, the chances of a vitamin D deficiency is also low. However it would be good to do a Vitamin D level as low vitamin D levels are implicated in many health issues.
Do get back to me if you have further quires.
Wish you good health.
